News Consumer is a non-profit, non-partisan group that teaches how to evaluate news stories in ways that help people be better informed and demonstrates why journalistic standards are vital to that process.
News served with a large dose of opinion has not been unusual in the history of the American press, but in recent decades, the mainstream press has been guided by codes of ethics that called for objectivity and fairness. That leaves most contemporary news consumers with little experience in dealing with the news media’s more boisterous practices.
Today’s increasingly competitive and changing media landscape finds opinion and bias returning to the news and consumers are unprepared to recognize when opinion is masquarading as fact.
We believe it is important to help news consumers navigate a more partisan environment and provide them the tools they need to recognize bias and determine which facts are relevant to their lives.
Without the facts, we put ourselves at the mercy of those who depend upon our ignorance for their plans to succeed. Our best chance for a better life for ourselves and society depends upon our ability to gather the facts we need and decide for ourselves the best path to take.
